Open Source and the Cloud: Pay Dirt or Parasite? (53:39 minutes)
Does using open source software pay off in a total cost sense when
compared to commercial offerings today? Is it worth the usually lower
cost, or will an enterprise that casts its lot with FOSS be trapped in a
high-risk situation where they can't get support and innovation?

Story Highlights
------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------
1. Walking a Mile in Their Shoes: Vendor Security Questionnaires
------------------------------------------------------------

"Vendor security questionnaire" -- three innocuous-sounding words that
can leave security folks trembling. If you're in security -- no matter
what company you're with -- there's a good chance you know exactly what
I'm talking about, either because you've experienced firsthand the pain
of trying to vet the information security controls of the multitude of
third parties that your organization exchanges data with.

2. Mac Enterprise Apps and the Evolution of Open Source
------------------------------------------------------------

It's no secret that Apple has dominated the headlines in computing over
the last several years, earning new devotees through consumer-aimed
offerings like the iPod, iTunes and the iPhone. Whether purposeful or
not, gradually or suddenly, Macs have now roared into the business
world.

3. Can a Few Good Hackers Plug Holes in US' Swiss-Cheese Nets?
------------------------------------------------------------

Federal authorities aren't looking to prosecute them, but to pay them to
secure the nation's networks. General Dynamics Information Technology
put out an ad last month on behalf of the Homeland Security Department
seeking someone who could "think like the bad guy."

4. Mayo Launches HealthVault-Powered Patient Records Site
------------------------------------------------------------

The Mayo Clinic has combined its medical expertise with Microsoft's
technology in a free Web site launching Tuesday that will let people
store personal health and medical information. The "Mayo Clinic Health
Manager," as the site is called, is one of many emerging services for
so-called personal health records.

5. S. Korean Blogger Acquitted of Spreading Financial Falsehoods
------------------------------------------------------------

A popular South Korean blogger, who was initially touted as an economic
prophet for his dire predictions on the global economy, was cleared
Monday of spreading false information in a closely watched case that
sparked heated debate over freedom of speech in cyberspace. Park Dae-
sung, 30, an unemployed Seoul resident, was acquitted by the Seoul
Central District Court.

6. Obama Taps DC-Area Tech Leader as First US CTO
------------------------------------------------------------

President Barack Obama has rounded out his panel of high-tech advisors,
naming Aneesh Chopra, the state of Virginia's secretary of technology,
as the chief technology officer of the U.S. While not having the heft of
a cabinet-level appointment, the newly created position is still seen as
pivotal to many of the Obama administration's initiatives.

21 APR 2009 - Pace Wins Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation for
High Definition Set-Top Box Technology

Pace's second successive Queen's Award

Pace plc (pic.l), the leading independent developer of digital TV
technologies for the global payTV industry, is proud to announce it has
won a 2009 Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation, in recognition of
its pioneering work developing high definition set top box technology.
This is Pace's second successive Queen's Award, having won an
International Trade Award in 2008.

Neil Gaydon, Chief Executive Officer of Pace plc commented: "Winning a
Queen's Award for Innovation recognises Pace's leadership in the
development of high definition set-top box technology. We targeted the
global shift to high definition, working with some of the world's leading
payTV operators and solving complex technical challenges, which enabled us
to be first to market, ahead of our competitors, with new high definition
set-top box products. Our work has been based on sound business
principles, which when combined with the commitment and dedication of our
people has enabled us to demonstrate world-class innovation.

Neil continued: "High definition is a significant step change in how we
watch television and is seen as having the equivalent impact on a viewer's
TV experience as the move from black and white to colour had in the 20th
century. We established our high definition credentials in the US market
in 2002 and launched Europe's first high definition set-top boxes in 2006.
In 2008 we launched over 20 high definition products, a position unmatched
by any of our competitors."
Neil added: "The Pace business is going from strength to strength. Our
focus on continuous innovation and having the right products, at the right
time, to fuel the digital TV revolution has, and will continue to, deliver
excellent results."
